The Joan of Arc Book Club will discuss The Maid and The Queen, the fascinating story of the relationship between Joan and Queen Yolande, the power behind the throne. March 2 we’ll be discussing historical text The Hundred Years War, and June 1 we’ll be discussing the fiction novel Smoke City. Get your books from Frenchmen Art and Books. Book club discussions will take place at the Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center (4300 Broad Street, map). Book club details on our website.

Krewe Storage Unit Clean-Out Party THIS SATURDAY, Oct. 7 1-4 p.m. 

We need some help organizing and hauling stuff to trash and Goodwill. Maybe you could also score some cast-off craft supplies or old props!  It’s unit #120 at the Public Storage at the corner of Washington and Earhart (4474 Earhart, map). Captain Amanda’s cell is 504-940-4976, in case you need gate access to the property. If the gate is open, come on in.

Salon Volunteers needed!

Hope to see you next Saturday for our Salon conference! We need help with:

• Bringing some coolers of non-alcoholic beverages for our picnic lunch
• Picking up our pre-ordered lunches and delivering them fresh at lunch time (walking two doors down the street)
• Set up and pack up
• Greeting and staffing the krewe info table (right next to the lecture room in our new venue)
• Videographers to help us make a video of the process of getting our giant dragon puppet up on his feet (during the lunch break)

The Joan of Arc Project will present its 13^th annual conference, the Salon de Jeanne d’Arc, on Saturday September 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Rogers Memorial Chapel at Tulane University. (Full Schedule)The free lectures and presentations by local scholars, authors and artists are open to the public. Drop in for a particular session or stay all day! This year’s talks focus on the theme “Journeys with Joan: Spiritual, Historical and Cultural Journeys with Joan of Arc.” Topics cover Joan of Arc, her medieval French context, and the French heritage of New Orleans, presented by the Joan of Arc Project, producers of the annual Joan of Arc parade in partnership with the Medieval & Early Modern Studies Department at Tulane University.

New Venue: Rogers Memorial Chapel

We’re looking forward to a new venue this year, the Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel at 1229 Broadway (map), with a larger and more open lecture room, with room for our sale and information tables right at the lecture hall entrance. It’s also got a lovely shaded outdoor green space where we’ll enjoy lunch. We’re really excited about this space, but be warned that street parking on Broadway is the only convenient parking. Ride-sharing encouraged! There should be sufficient street parking, but you might have to walk a bit.

Art Show opening reception 5-7 p.m.

We cannot wait to unveil our 2023 JOAN OF ART show at Ariodante Contemporary Art and Craft Gallery this Saturday September 2!! Our 4th annual show will open in alignment with the Arts District of New Orleans “First Saturdays” and be on exhibit & for sale for the entire month of September.

2022 First Place winner by Max Bernardi. 2023 Joan of Art selections will be revealed this Saturday in person and on the web soon after.

The opening night reception Sept. 2 is open to all from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Krewe members, you’re welcome to come in costume or krewe colors! That evening, our local judges will select their top choices for our 2023 “Joan of Art” contest, and awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m. There will be a “Choix des Personnes”  (People’s Choice) award too!

Come out and celebrate with these local artists, get inspired by each of their unique views of Joan of Arc, meet members of Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc, and learn how you can become a member or volunteer for the 2024 parade.

Most importantly, come out to support local artists and artist supporters like our longtime art show partners Ariodante Contemporary Art and Craft Gallery (535 Julia Street map)

This year’s Joan of Art exhibit will feature the following artists: Jane Brewster, Marcela Carlin, Laura Darling Dinapolis, Carol M. Lynch, Claudia Lynch, Jeanne Parker Martin, Kathleen McCord, Karen Miller, Jennifer Ramos, Sarah Redmannm, and Kay Richoux.

We have a jam-packed next few months before parade season starts. Our Joan of Art submissions are open until July 31. Save the date for Sept. 2 to come in costume to the opening night of the Joan of Art juried exhibition at Ariodante Gallery on Julia Street. The Joan of Art exhibit opening is part of the monthly First Saturday art walk among the Julia Street galleries, so you may want to make a night of it.  Our annual full-day conference at Tulane University, the “Salon de Jeanne d’Arc,” is set for September 16. Snoball “Fight” and Live Music TODAY Aug. 19 at the French Market 11-4

Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc is armed for battle in the Barbezai Snoball Fight! Come for some icy fun and vote for the best flavor in the snoball flavor competition among 5 walking krewes, hosted by Krewe of Krampus as a fundraiser for accessible parade initiatives. Thanks to Captain Antoinette de Alteriis for creating our gourmet medieval-inspired “At the King’s Table” spiced fig snoball syrup, and thanks to everyone who contributed recipes or helped taste to select which flavor to enter in the competition.

Admission is free, and you purchase tickets to taste the snowballs. You can buy your tickets to taste all five in advance here (get the fifth one free if you buy in advance).

• 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Snoball tasting all day

Snoball Competition Saturday Aug. 19

We’re testing snoball recipes at the social this Wednesday because Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc will be one of several krewes vying for best syrup flavor in the “Snoball Fight” competition organized by Krewe of Krampus at the French Market on Saturday August 19, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Let us know if you’d be willing to volunteer for an hour or two at our table or help with snoball recipes or prep work.

2023 New Orleans “Maid of Honor” meets French “Jeanne” in Orléans

Emmeline Meyer, who portrayed “Joan of Arc” in the 2023 Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc parade in New Orleans is shown above meeting the 2023 “Jeanne d’Arc” of Orléans, France, Clairvie Quesne. Emmeline left for France on July 1 on a travel scholarship and cultural exchange generously arranged by the Rotary Foundation of New Orleans in partnership with the sister city Rotary Club of Orléans, France. Clairvie will visit New Orleans during our 2024 parade.
