New Year’s Work Party and Full Member Throws Pick-Up

Most members have a reason to at least stop by this workshop, which makes it a bustling party. Full members will be picking up throws, foot soldiers will be picking up costumes, and everyone will be working on making our signature tea light throws. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church at the corner of Carrollton and Zimple (1031 S. Carrollton, map). Enter from the side door on Zimple. Show off your own projects or bring a snack or wine to share if you like.  Delicious holiday leftovers welcome. Dress: casual.

  • Around 1 p.m., the new St. Michael’s Angel Army Choir performance group will give a sneak preview of their music.

Full Member Throws Clarifications

Full members are encouraged to engage in audience interaction. Throws are one way to do this, but if you have a bit of theater or a prop instead of throws, that’s great too!

  • Full members are welcome and encouraged to design their own unique handmade throws. They should be relevant to Joan of Arc or your parade section. No Mardi Gras beads or other typical Mardi Gras throws. Throws Guide
  • For full members we offer a selection of custom krewe merchandise throws and throws handmade or hand embellished by krewe volunteers for sale. Your purchase of these signature throws raises funds for the krewe.  Pre-order throws now to pick up at New Year’s (don’t wait, because many items are almost sold out already).
  • Full members receive one included throws package PER MEMBERSHIP (companion members and children do not receive a package). This kit consists of 20 prayer cards, 20 tealight candles, a box of 50 Flaming Heretic matches, a set of 5 of this year’s wood doubloon, and a set of one of each of this year’s playing cards. Get to St. Andrew’s New Year’s Work Party by 2 p.m. to pick up your “free” package. If you can’t pick up in person on this date, please have a friend pick-up yours. As a last resort, annoy Captain Amanda in advance to make special arrangements to pick up yours.
  • After 2 p.m. on New Year’s any member packs not yet picked up will be given away to other people, so hang out until the end of the workshop if you’re hoping to score some extra throws. The reason we do this is that the tealights become bulky and fragile once assembled. We already have several carloads of stuff that have to be brought to and from New Year’s and to and from the banquet, even without factoring in 20-30 forgotten member bags. Please keep in mind that we are an all-volunteer operation.
  • Note: If you pre-ordered throws to pick up at the banquet, your order will also be available for pick-up on New Year’s if you’d like to pick it up early!

Saturday, January 4: Pre-Parade Medieval Banquet at Livaudais Hall

We’ll have king cake, a hot buffet supper, wine at your table, and medieval music, 7-9:30 p.m. Caterer Jacques-Imo’s makes us a medieval roast pig and a full medieval menu of roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, and fig compote.  We’ll be welcoming the French “Jeanne d’Arc” and the rest of the delegation from our sister city Orléans, France. Luke Brechtelsbauer and friends will entertain us with medieval music, and we’ll have a drum and chant performance of Joan’s trial. Show off your beautiful medieval costume and share a sneak preview of your throws with friends! All paraders are invited — full members, honoraries and their entourage, group members, performers, and foot soldier volunteers. Paraders may also purchase non-member tickets for your guests. Tickets were $65 for members, $15 extra for non-members. BUT after  December 25th, ticket prices increased to $75, and after January 1, ticket prices will increase to $85, so buy your ticket now! Dress: Medieval costumes are strongly encouraged. Many krewe members (including foot soldier volunteers) wear their parade costumes.  There is ample street parking near the hall.
* – Yes, the banquet ticket price has increased, but please note that even with this increase and a sell-out crowd, ticket sales do not quite cover the cost of the event.  We DO expect a sell-out though, so get your ticket now.

Sunday, January 5th: Mass, Second Line and Jazz Brunch

Join your fellow krewe members for 9 a.m. worship at Saint Louis Cathedral the Sunday before the parade. In the spirit of Joan, worship is the way to begin any important endeavor!  After mass, the Soul Heirs Band will lead us in a jam and second line 4 blocks from the Cathedral to the Joan of Arc statue, where we’ll do a jazz brunch at Market Cafe.  You can attend the mass, second line, brunch or all three, but you’ll need an advance ticket for the brunch.  Dress: second line spirit, krewe colors blue and gold, krewe gear, medieval-inspired (not costumes).  NOTE: When the brunch sells out, you can still do the mass and second-line and you may even be able to join us at Market Cafe for lunch on your own.

Workshops today, tomorrow, and more!

Coming Up….

  • Saturday, Dec. 14 and Sunday Dec. 15, Props Workshops: 1-5 p.m. at 7330 Sycamore
  • Tuesday, Dec. 17 Throws Workshop and Tea light kit pick-up: 7:30 p.m. at 7330 Sycamore
  • Wednesday Dec. 18 & Thursday Dec. 19th: 10-5 p.m. Costume sewing workshops at 7330 Sycamore
  • Wednesday Dec. 18 & Thursday Dec. 19th: 4-7 p.m. Foot Soldier costume pick-ups at the krewe storage unit 3900 Tchoupitoulas
  • Details below and full calendar of events on our website

Props Workshops Dec. 14 and 15th, 1-5 p.m.

Channel your creative self, or your problem-solving self, or your engineer self and help build, revise and/or repair props. We have several props projects planned for this year: raising the statue canopy, spiffing up and developing a few new banners, adding haunches to St. Margaret’s dragon Adversaire, and, our biggest project, constructing a new lighted “Blessing Joan” puppet to end the parade. We always have jobs for all skill levels and people willing to learn! This workshop takes place at the krewe “den,” the home of Captain Amanda (and her two cats), 7330 Sycamore St., map).

Sewing Workshops Dec. 18 and 19th, 10-5 p.m.

Captain Amanda needs help with costumes for the Voices battalion, our new performance group St. Michael’s Angel Army Choir, and also the new Blessing Joan puppet. There’ll be hand sewing and machine sewing. All skill levels welcome. You can help even if you don’t sew because there’s always non-sewing steps of pinning, cutting, measuring and ironing. If you do sew, you might consider bringing your sewing machine.

Tealight kit pick-up Tuesday Dec. 17th 7:30-9 p.m.

Together we wrap 2,500 led tea light candles in a translucent paper sleeve. While we make many of those tea lights at the New Year’s Work Party January 1st at St. Andrew’s, it helps a LOT if people do some ahead of time to give us a head start. Stop by and pick up a kit of tea lights to take home and (in true medieval style) make all your visiting family work as serfs over the holiday to get a hundred or so tea lights done. It’s an easy craft involving nothing more than a little tape! Bring your completed tea lights back to us at 11 a.m. January 1 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (1031 Carrollton, side entrance on Zimple).

Full member included throws

Reminder to full members — individual full members (not companions) are entitled to a set of prayer cards, matches and tea lights, plus a keepsake few doubloons and pack of one each playing card. Pick up these throws from the New Year’s Work Party at St. Andrew’s, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Wednesday January 1, 1031 Carrollton (side entrance on Zimple). If you cannot pick up your throws on that date, please arrange for a friend to pick yours up for you. As a last resort, email to request that yours be set aside for you specially, and make arrangements to pick them up.  Throw kits still NOT picked up by 3 p.m. on Wednesday January 1 will be given away to others. If you’d like to score some extra throws, stick around the January 1 workshop until 3, when remaining throw packages will be distributed.

Mark your calendar:

Be sure to save the date for these special events:

  • Wednesday January 1: New Year’s Work Party

Volunteer Foot Soldiers needed

We need everyone’s help to recruit more foot soldiers! Our “Foot Soldier” members wear simple medieval costumes provided by the krewe and make our parade possible by carrying banners, shepherding props, and walking security.  Please share the foot soldier sign-up link with your social networks: https://forms.gle/fdRPJCB2AnakAd189
Full members, being a foot soldier is a nice free way for friends to parade with you. Have them list your name and parade section on the last question of the form, and we will make every effort to assign friends together.

Foot soldiers, if you’ve already signed up, you should have received an email and/or text message with costume pick-up details. You can also find all the costume pick-up dates with details on our calendar.

Our giant new Blessing Joan puppet is coming along! Next we’ll add hair…..

Throws and Props Workshops

We’ll have people working on both props and throws as we work hard to finish our amazing new Blessing Joan giant puppet in time for the parade, as well as to complete all our signature throws in time for delivery at the first throws pick-up date, the coronation party. Besides helping us get ready, these workshops are a great way to get to know other krewe members, bounce ideas, show off your own krewe projects, and get questions answered. These workshops are at the home of Captain Amanda and her cat 7330 Sycamore (map)

Coronation Party Monday Dec. 9

Be part of the building excitement at the krewe’s annual coronation party, as we reveal our 2025 King Charles VII, Queen Yolande of Aragon, and Maid of Honor, the young student leader who portrays Joan of Arc on horseback in our parade. This feels like the kick-off to our parade social season, as we’ll enjoy medieval-inspired hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar and share krewe news. It’s at the Degas House (2306 Esplanade, map), where the French impressionist painter Edgar Degas stayed with his New Orleans family. Dress: holiday bling or krewe colors blue and gold (not costumes). Pre-order now to pick up your throws or keepsakes at the party. We’ll also have a krewe store open at the party for in-person purchases. Please do keep in mind that most throws WILL sell out before the parade, so don’t wait too long to get your order in.

Thanks to our former King David Villarubia for donating us the use of the charming Degas House venue, and to krewe member Cathy Rehfus-Wilsek and her team for contributing the handmade food!

Props Workshops Nov. 16 and 17

Sales are open for 2025 throws, keepsakes and tickets. Pre-order now to pick up at the coronation party on Dec. 9. Get yours before they sell out.

Help organize and launder the foot soldier costumes

Meet our volunteer director Heidi Bayer at the krewe storage unit at 3900 Tchoupitoulas (map), to help her with sorting, labeling, organizing, mending and laundering our inventory of foot soldier costumes. Our unit is very close to the entrance so you can probably just shout for her to open the gate for you, but here’s Heidi’s cell number if you need her to let you through the security gate: (504) 812-1441. She has two more work sessions planned: Saturday Nov. 23rd 11a-6p, and Sunday Nov. 24 12-4. Note: Foot soldier costumes will NOT be ready to pick up yet — this is just the work session to get them ready!!! Foot soldier costume pick-ups begin Nov. 30.

Throws Workshop Sunday Nov. 24, 1-6 p.m.

Come craft with us at the home of krewe captain Amanda Helm at 7330 Sycamore St. All skill levels are welcome and all supplies will be provided. These are a great way to connect with other krewe members, get your questions answered, show off your own krewe projects, and bounce ideas. Note: The throws workshops are more about sitting down and chatting as we do peaceful repeated tasks. If you’re more interested in creative problem-solving, go for the props workshop. This workshop takes place at the krewe “den,” the home of Captain Amanda (and her two cats), 7330 Sycamore St., map).

Nov. 9: Book Club discussion of Mark Twain’s “Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc”

Mark Twain was a Joan nut like us!  Join us Saturday, Nov. 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to discuss the book Mark Twain said was his best work, a highly accurate historical fiction, told by an invented character, Joan’s scribe. Open to the public, no requirement to be a krewe member. Yes, you can join the discussion even if you haven’t read the book!  This year’s parade will include a new Mark Twain character in the Legacy battalion, portrayed by krewe member Robert Desmarais Sullivan. We’ll meet at the Old Absinthe House, which Mark Twain himself frequented when visiting New Orleans (240 Bourbon Street, map. Get your copy from the NOLA Public Library or Frenchmen Art and Books.

Props Workshops Nov. 9, 16 and 17

Channel your creative self, or your problem-solving self, or your engineer self and help build, revise and/or repair props. We have several props projects planned for this year: raising the statue canopy, spiffing up and developing a few new banners, adding haunches to St. Margaret’s dragon Adversaire, and, our biggest project, constructing a new lighted giant Joan puppet to end the parade. We always have jobs for all skill levels and people willing to learn! But please do keep in mind that all our props are unique, which means we only ever build the prototype, and we don’t have any kit or instructions — expect to be part of the problem-solving process.  If you prefer to have step-by-step instructions and a finished model to follow, we recommend the throws workshops. This workshop takes place at the krewe “den,” the home of Captain Amanda (and her two cats), 7330 Sycamore St., map).

Jeanne d’Arc presentation IN FRENCH

Krewe members Joan Fox and Faustine Hilliard will give a 55-minute presentation in French about Joan of Arc with music and images at the luncheon of the meeting of the Les Causeries du Lundi at noon Tuesday Nov. 12 at Deutsches Haus (1700 Moss St., map). There is a $10.00 entry fee for guests who are not members of Les Cuaseries society.  Lunch is provided. Drinks may be purchased at their bar. Les Causeries du Lundi is a society that promotes French language. (In spite of the name, they now meet on Tuesdays.)

Sales are open for 2025 throws, keepsakes and tickets. Pre-order now to pick up at the coronation party on Dec. 9. Be warned: most things sell out!
