That moment in 1905 when a girl dressed as Joan of Arc presented Mark Twain with a laurel leafed crown...the poor guy thought he'd seen a ghost!

The event took place on December 5, 1905, at Delmonico’s, a famed restaurant in New York City, to celebrate Mark Twain’s 70th birthday. Hosted by Harper & Brothers, Twain’s longtime publisher, it was a grand occasion filled with prominent literary figures, friends, and admirers. During the celebration, a young woman dressed as Joan of Arc presented Twain with a laurel wreath, a traditional symbol of honor, paying homage to his impact on literature and his deep admiration for Joan of Arc.

Fun Fact: TWAIN'S BIRTHDAY IS NOVEMBER 30TH, ALSO THE LAST DAY OF HURRICANE SEASON!! Another excuse for a celebration...stay tuned for some ideas to be shared at our book club meeting this Saturday at Old Absinthe House!

We trust the butterflies!JOY COMES BACK

"When you finally realise that joy

is less fireworks
more firefly

less orchestra
more birdsong

she will come back much more often

for joy will not fight
with the fast pace of this life
she is not in the shiny or the new

she breathes in the basic
shimmers in the simple
and dances in the daily to and fro

joy has been beckoning you
for many a year my friend
you were just too busy doing, to see

the very next time joy wraps
her quiet warmth around you
as the garden embraces your weary body
in its wildness

tip her a nod

you cannot force her to stay
but if you are a gracious host

joy comes back."
