We encourage krewe members to make their own throws, and we love the creativity and variety that brings to our parade. But we also make thousands of throws we sell as a fundraiser for the krewe. These official krewe throws:
- Raise about $10,000 “profit” for the krewe
- Ensure that members who lack the time or skill to make their own throws have appropriate throws to hand out
- Ensure that at least some throws have the quantity and consistency necessary for the crowd to recognize and want to collect them as signature throws associated with our brand
- Build a lot of comraderie among the throws workshop crafters
- Teach our members craft skills
Ways you can help with the official krewe fundraiser throws
- Attend workshops and pitch in! Come craft with us, no skills required.
- If you’re a skilled crafter or want to be the designer. Contact Captain Amanda when you have something in mind:
- Be a craft leader: Ideas that come with an execution plan are welcome! You do the design and prototypes, source the materials, and lead some workshops to guide others to provide the labor. Work with Captain Amanda to get approval. You can donate the materials, or the krewe can purchase the materials. You can host workshops at your own home or another venue you arrange, or you’re welcome to lead craft sessions at Captain Amanda’s house (which functions as the krewe den).
- Donate throws YOU make on your own time to the krewe for sale in our store (get approval from Captain Amanda for your proposal). You can donate materials, or the krewe may be able to reimburse you for materials.
- Finished packages of throws krewe members will buy to hand out in the parade. Usually we target about 500 items, sold to krewe members in packs of 20, but for labor-intensive, bulky or expensive items, packs of 10 or even 5 can work. 15-25 packages available to sell is a good target.
- Finished individual throws that are samples of the handmade throws you’ll be giving out yourself. If you give us 40-50, we can include it in the “keepsake” sampler packs krewe members usually buy to keep as souvenirs and advertise it as part of what’s included. In smaller quantities, we can use them for gifts for media, our French delegatoin, send with our young Joan when she goes to France, or include them in keepsake packs as a lagniappe.
- NOTE: Planning ahead is essential for this! We launch our throw sales at the Salon Oct. 4. We’d like to have our krewe store “product” listings finalized by Oct. 2 and we’d like to have production complete by the coronation party, usually around Dec. 15.
