Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc by David Elliott
New York Times best-selling children’s author David Elliott will read selected poems and discuss the story behind his award-winning book of poetry, “Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc,” published in 2019. Using medieval poetry forms, Elliott’s poems speak with a contemporary voice that not only brings Joan’s story to life but also lends modern insight to timeless struggles of gender and speaking truth to power. The 2020 Joan of Art juried exhibition runs through Sept. 30 at Airiodante Gallery in the New Orleans Arts District. In this panel discussion, meet some of the selected artists as they share their inspiration and experience painting St. Joan. Medieval Poetess Christine de Pizan, by Thomas Martin, Ph.D. With dramatic readings in French and English by Loyola students Ella Cogerino, Lucinda Ealey, Madeline Moore and Peyton Rome
Loyola Medieval Studies faculty Thomas Martin will discuss Christine de Pizan, a court poet and Europe’s first female professional writer. An outspoken defender of women, de Pizan was highly regarded in her own time for her prose writings on politics, philosophy and humanism as well as her poetry. Loyola students will do a dramatic reading of her poem “The Tale of Joan of Arc,” penned just a few days after the coronation of Charles VII at the height of Joan’s triumph. Video of the webinar
