Saturday August 2 Royalty Reunion and Maid’s Trip Sharing
Krewe members and volunteers are welcome to join us at L’Union Française for an informal gathering to meet current and former Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc royalty (Kings Charles VII, Queen Yolandes of Aragon, Maids of Honor) and enjoy a special slideshow by our reigning Maid of Honor, Life Sacco, sharing the highlights of her summer trip to Orleans, France, our sister city. Arrive by 4:30 p.m. to enjoy the presentation, which will begin after brief remarks at that time. We will also receive updates from current and past royalty on their community projects, events, initiatives, and other news.

Throws Workshop Wednesday August 16th
To all crafters: We are making little books/journals for throws for the 2026 Joan of Arc parade. Come help us put them together on Wednesday, August 16, from 5:30pm until 9:00pm at 2317 Metairie Court, Metairie, LA, at the home of krewe board member Carol Lynch. Carol will feed you! BYOB. Come when you can, stay as long as you can. Text Carol Lynch- 504-343-5327.
Throws Workshop Saturday August 9 and 30
Come craft with us at the home of krewe captain Amanda Helm at 7330 Sycamore St. We’ll be working on finishing the “real shield” canvas-covered curved wood logo shields and on the 2026 saint medallions. All skill levels are welcome and all supplies will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own tools if you prefer. These are a great way to connect with other krewe members, get your questions answered, show off your own krewe projects, and bounce ideas.
Creative input invited: Host a throws workshop
We’d love to have some fresh ideas for handmade throws. If you have an idea for throws that krewe members could work together to produce for sale to other krewe members as a krewe fundraiser, you’re invited to propose a throw idea for approval, and then take responsibility for putting the materials together and supervising one or more workshops to produce them. You can host at your own location, or you can work with Captain Amanda to be the craft supervisor for one or more workshops at her home. Typically we’re looking for throws that can be realistically sold for at least double the production cost, and that around 600-1,000 can be produced by supervised unskilled crafters in a few work sessions. They also need to be manageable for people to carry on the parade route. The krewe can reimburse you for materials for approved projects. Include in your proposal a picture of a sample item, the time it takes to complete, an estimated total cost for materials to produce 600-1,000, and an estimated per-item cost, and some dates YOU would be available and willing to supervise workshops.
All throws to be included in krewe sales must be planned by Sept. 15 and completed by December 6.
Also, if you have handmade throws you’d like to share with other krewe members, you’re invited to donate 40 handmade throws to the krewe for us to include in the keepsake packs we sell to members and give to the French delegation and media. We don’t want this to diminish the availability of handmade throws on the parade route, though, so please only donate your throws to this if you’ve already made all you can carry on the parade route!
Book Club: Daughters of the New Year (added to Book Club schedule for discussion August 23)
Since our Queen Yolande this year is Megan Holt, executive director of One Book One New Orleans, we’ve added this year’s One Book One New Orleans book (featuring a young female warrior!) to our book club for an in-person discussion: Saturday August 23, 2025, 10 a.m. to noon, Dough Nguyener’s Cafe, 2424 Tulane Avenue (map, menu)
RSVP to Krewe Founder Amy Kirk Duvoisin so she can reserve a table.
“Daughters of the New Year” is a novel by E.M. Tran that explores the lives of five generations of Vietnamese mothers and daughters, told in reverse chronological order. The story begins in present-day New Orleans and travels back through time to the Vietnam War, French colonial rule, and ultimately to the Trung sisters’ rebellion against Chinese occupation in the first century.
The novel weaves together themes of motherhood, womanhood, the cyclical nature of time, and the difficulties of immigration, particularly for the Vietnamese diaspora. It delves into the cultural loss and challenges faced by immigrant families, exploring the complexities of relationships and the search for identity. The narrative also incorporates elements of magical realism, with the sisters experiencing visions and connections to their ancestral past.
Save the date! Art Show opening night reception Sept. 6
Krewe members are encouraged to come in krewe colors blue and gold (or costume) to the opening reception for our 2025 Joan of Art juried exhibition at Aariodante Gallery in the New Orleans Arts District (535 Julia Street, map)! This year, the judges will view the art in person and select the winners during the opening reception starting at 5, and everyone can vote in the Choix des Personnes award (until 6:45). Awards will be presented at 7 p.m., and people will hang out until 8. The exhibit will continue at the gallery through Sept. 30.
Joan of Art contest deadline July 31
We’re again calling for submissions of original Joan of Arc-related art work for our annual juried art show in partnership with Ariodante Gallery on Julia Street in the New Orleans Arts District! If selected by our jury panel, artwork will be exhibited at the gallery, and prizes will be awarded at the First Saturday exhibit opening Sept. 6. If you know any artists, please invite them to submit!
