Nov. 9: Book Club discussion of Mark Twain’s “Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc”

Mark Twain was a Joan nut like us!  Join us Saturday, Nov. 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to discuss the book Mark Twain said was his best work, a highly accurate historical fiction, told by an invented character, Joan’s scribe. Open to the public, no requirement to be a krewe member. Yes, you can join the discussion even if you haven’t read the book!  This year’s parade will include a new Mark Twain character in the Legacy battalion, portrayed by krewe member Robert Desmarais Sullivan. We’ll meet at the Old Absinthe House, which Mark Twain himself frequented when visiting New Orleans (240 Bourbon Street, map. Get your copy from the NOLA Public Library or Frenchmen Art and Books.

More about the book club

Props Workshops Nov. 9, 16 and 17

Channel your creative self, or your problem-solving self, or your engineer self and help build, revise and/or repair props. We have several props projects planned for this year: raising the statue canopy, spiffing up and developing a few new banners, adding haunches to St. Margaret’s dragon Adversaire, and, our biggest project, constructing a new lighted giant Joan puppet to end the parade. We always have jobs for all skill levels and people willing to learn! But please do keep in mind that all our props are unique, which means we only ever build the prototype, and we don’t have any kit or instructions — expect to be part of the problem-solving process.  If you prefer to have step-by-step instructions and a finished model to follow, we recommend the throws workshops. This workshop takes place at the krewe “den,” the home of Captain Amanda (and her two cats), 7330 Sycamore St., map).

Jeanne d’Arc presentation IN FRENCH

Krewe members Joan Fox and Faustine Hilliard will give a 55-minute presentation in French about Joan of Arc with music and images at the luncheon of the meeting of the Les Causeries du Lundi at noon Tuesday Nov. 12 at Deutsches Haus (1700 Moss St., map). There is a $10.00 entry fee for guests who are not members of Les Cuaseries society.  Lunch is provided. Drinks may be purchased at their bar. Les Causeries du Lundi is a society that promotes French language. (In spite of the name, they now meet on Tuesdays.)

Sales are open for 2025 throws, keepsakes and tickets. Pre-order now to pick up at the coronation party on Dec. 9. Be warned: most things sell out!
